Do Work Heartily as to the Lord

Do work Heartily

As working Christians, what attitude should we have in our workplace?

“And whatever you do, do it heartily,
as to the Lord and not to men.”
– Colossians 3:23

Joseph rose from being a slave to being the prime minister of Egypt. What a significant jump we all want to see in our career. But you know what? He DIDN’T want to go to Egypt in the first place! He was sold involuntarily by his brothers!

Truth to be told, Joseph has no idea what God’s plan is for him in any stage of his life. From being a slave, to become an overseer of Potiphar’s house, to an overseer of all the prisoners, to the second in command in Egypt, he remained the same work ethic: work with diligence in the given task as working for the Lord.

At Potiphar’s, Joseph’s diligent in his work eventually made him the overseer of the house. Even when he was put in prison for false accusations, his obedience and hardworking led to prison keeper committing all prisoners to his hand.

And when Joseph got the task to interpret Pharaoh’s dream, he took the extra mile to provide a solution for the upcoming famine (note that he did this BEFORE Joseph even knows he get to be free from the jail) and was then set over all the land of Egypt!

For many of us, the job we have right now might not be where our passion is. Joseph has shown us that wherever we work, we should do our best. Even in tough situations he still did because there is a higher court of justice which supersedes all other courts: that of God!

Rosemarie, Thank you for your explanation of this verse. Yes, we should do our best in anything we do and leave the justice to God. God is fair and righteous and He never fails us.
