It’s common to feel overwhelmed by the vast sea of books and endless streams of information, especially when learning starts to feel monotonous or stagnant. But there’s inspiration to be found in the approach of James Clark Maxwell, the father of electromagnetism, to the pursuit of knowledge.

Take a look at Cambridge University’s Cavendish Laboratory, founded in 1874, which produced an astonishing 29 Nobel Prize winners within just over a century, making a monumental impact on modern physics. Above the entrance to the lab, a biblical verse is inscribed: “Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them”—a proposal made by none other than Maxwell himself. This quote reflects Maxwell’s belief that investigating the Creator’s handiwork is not only a privilege but also a duty, revealing the driving force behind his intellectual curiosity and the high standards he set for himself and those who would follow.

So, how do we reignite our passion for learning? Perhaps it’s time to adopt a mindset akin to the famous British detective Sherlock Holmes—keen, curious, and always eager to explore the wonders of the world around us.
