In our tradition of valuing relationships, the concept of “boundaries” might seem weak. However, the idea of boundaries originates from the Bible, with Jesus setting an example of establishing healthy limits. By placing God at the center of our lives, we can make correct judgments and define the levels of boundaries in our relationships with others.

A boundary aligned with God’s will means we can freely set our own limits regarding emotions, beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors. We should uphold these boundaries without fear or guilt, allowing ourselves and others the space to say “no.” God has given us a spirit not of timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

Focusing on “boundaries” is not about passively drawing lines, but actively clarifying our responsibilities. We are responsible for our own lives and should approach tasks with calmness and joy, courageously not letting negative feelings, emotions, attitudes, or behaviors persist, and taking responsibility for the outcomes of our boundaries. We are responsible “to” others but should not be responsible “for” them, meaning we shouldn’t make decisions for others or do what they should do.

God has set specific guidelines and principles for our work, as seen when He instructed Adam and Eve: “You must not do as you please. Some things you can do, and some things you cannot.” The Bible also warns us to keep our promises, avoid deceit, and not to be greedy or corrupt. Boundaries are crucial in all relationships—between parents and children, spouses, friends, and colleagues. Without clear boundaries, we risk entangling ourselves in conflicts and suffering.

Healthy emotional boundaries require a clear internal definition—understanding our own feelings and knowing our responsibilities towards ourselves and others. Over-sensitivity often reveals weak or unclear boundaries. I have struggled with over-sensitivity from a young age, overly concerned with others’ opinions and often affected by their emotions, opinions, and actions. Without healthy emotional boundaries to protect myself and develop rational judgment, I grew up lacking confidence, being overly sensitive, and unhappy.

Healthy emotional boundaries help us not overly concern ourselves with others’ opinions, feel guilty for rejecting others’ negative emotions and problems, and avoid excessive involvement or over-protecting others. We all need to define boundaries that align with God’s will and maintain respect for our standards, beliefs, and values, courageously saying no when necessary. Boundaries are not just for talking about but for practicing and implementing. Only through God’s mercy can we maintain healthy boundaries, bring about real change, and offer true help. By prioritizing our own “garden of life” and focusing on our boundaries, we can build healthy, mutually beneficial, and respectful relationships. Adhering to eternal, God-approved boundaries will earn respect and help us respect others.

“The Lord God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.'” — Genesis 2:16-17
